How to Play Rich & Expressive Chords on Piano

Ever wonder how to make your piano chords sound fuller, richer, and more emotional? The secret is in your chord voicings! 

So, what exactly are voicings? Simply put, voicings are different ways you can arrange the notes in a chord. Instead of playing the standard root-position triads, you can space out the notes, add extensions, or even leave some notes out to create a more open, lush sound.

Think of it like cooking. The same ingredients can taste completely different depending on how you prepare them. Chord voicings work the same way!

You may have also heard of the concept of stacking 3rds on top of your triads, or adding “chord extensions” to create richer sounding chords?

But it can seem pretty intimidating thinking about learning all these extra numbers and extensions.

Well here are two beautiful chord voicings you can use that are simple to learn and extremely effective.

The First Beautiful Chord Voicing

The first one is a Major 9 chord. Here is how to play the "block chord". Which means all of the notes played/squashed together without any particular voicing.

Another beautiful chord voicing is the Minor 9. Here's how to build the basic block chord:

Again you can use these steps to find this voicing anywhere on the piano.
